Once the stuff of revolutions, feminism has now come to be regarded as old-fashioned, out-dated or irrelevant. Now, more than ever, the world is trying to convince us that we have arrived, we’ve got all we need and we should keep quiet and stop going on about our rights. This sounds way too familiar for me, in fact, it sounds like we need feminism more than ever.
Why? This is why…
“Now as a feminist, I have a resource that is like no other: a long line of women who have the beautiful ability to share their experience – their obstacles and triumphs, set backs and head starts. We can help each other finally be who we are. We walk through life together as women, in all our individual ways. This is what makes women so strong, what makes feminism so powerful, what makes an individual. This is what has brought me back to ME. This is mine.” Sharon Lennon
“Democracy is not something that you believe in, or something that you hang your hat on. It’s somethign that you do, you participate. Without participation, democracy crumbles and fails. If you participate, you win, and the future is yours.” Abbie Hoffman, US Radical Activist
“Programming is a powerful think. It makes you lazy. It makes you vulnerable. And until you can recognize that it’s there, it works for the opposition. It makes you lower your voice…It is a dangerous thing to assume that just because we were raised in a feminist era, we are safe. We are not, they are still after us.” Ellen Neuborne
“It is obvious that the suppression of sexual agency and exploration from within or from without, is often used as a method of social control and domination. Witness widespread genital mutilation and the homophobia that dictatorially mandates heterosexuality; imagine the stolen power of the millions affected by just these two global murderers of self-authorization and determination. Without being able to respond to and honour the desires of our bodies and our selves, we become cut off from our instincts for pleasure, dissatisfied, living under rules and thoughts that are not our own. When we deny ourselves safe and shameless exploration and access to reliable information, we damage our ability to even know what sexual pleasure feels or look like.” Rebecca Walker
“I refuse to live my life in a box labeled Female. In my more ambitious and perhaps foolishly hopeful moments, I imagine a world in which there is no simple categorisation by sex, no gender, but only people.” Jennifer Reid Maxcy Myhre
“If we are sincerely concerned with ending the subordination of all women, feminists cannot afford unquestioned assumptions, orthodoxies or dogmatic commitments to positions alleged to be ‘politically correct’”. Alison Jagger
“It is time to get angry again.” Germaine Greer
If none of these convince you, then I’m not sure what will. We cannot sit back and let the world we want be dismantled around us. We must contribute to critical discussion so that we can be a part of decisions that affect our lives.
